Inter-Action Experimental Animation From Seattle

Animator Tess Martin presents a collection of short animations that explore inter-actions - action between each frame of motion as well as between each subject on screen. Made individually by twelve members of SEAT (Seattle Experimental Animation Team) these thought-provoking films reflect on love, insanity, faith and murder.

Disillusioned television personality is looking for answers but doesn't know the questions. Tony accepts a drunken £100 bet and sets off with his unconventional traveling companion for an adventure that proved to be entertaining, educational, challenging and at times downright silly. Based on Tony Hawks' book.

Uranium - Is it a Country, film and debate 2-5pm

Film and debate about the pros and cons of nuclear energy. The film shows the dirty side of so-called 'clean' nuclear energy. Where uranium comes from,where it goes to and what is left behind. The film takes us to Australia to the world's largest uranium mine and to Europe where this source of 'clean energy' is a gold mine for the energy corporations. The film will be followed by speakers for and against nuclear power. Organised by Medact, an organisation of health professionals tackling the roots of conflict.

Sarah Diehl's documentary feature explores and contrasts changes in Poland and South Africa regarding abortion laws and their impact on the lives of women. Sarah will join us for a talk prior to the screening. This screening is a fund raising event for the Abortion Support Network.

Riverside: Newcastle's Legendary Alternative Music Venue (book launch)

****THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT. NOTE GUESTLIST IS CLOSED DUE TO CAPACITY**** An event celebrating the launch of a new book, Riverside: Newcastle's Legendary Alternative Music Venue by Hazel Plater and Carl Taylor, published by Tonto Books. The night will consist of an exclusive screening of a new 45 minute edit of the 'lost' 1991 Tyne Tees TV fly-on-the-wall show 'Riverside' (8 pm screening) followed by live sets from two North East bands PUPPY FAT and HUG who are reforming especially to play this launch. Copies of the book will be available for sale on the night. SOLD OUT EVENT (£1 S&S 2011 membership required for first timers). Doors open 7.30 pm. All ticket proceeds to the Star and Shadow (fundraiser event). All attendees consent to being filmed or sound recorded as part of the audience.

The Canny Little Library is the best library in the star and shadow/ city / uk for books, zines and pamphlets with a focus on titles with a more critical stance towards the society we live in and not available in most regular libraries/ bookshops. The collection includes graphic novels, art, feminism, queer, gender, lgbt, politics, sex, health, relationships, DIY, anarchism, philosophy, global struggles, science, nature and environment, worker's struggles, history, prison struggles, cookery, anti-racism and information for action. All titles are available to browse and borrow for free. The Star and Shadow also houses a large collection of film, photography and theatre books available for browsing and reference. A daytime event, using the cinema and bar, as part of 'the big draw' : its aims being quite simply to encourage people to draw. Projected drawing in the cinema, collaborative comic making and large-scale participatory stuff. Details will be confirmed nearer the time, but this will be an event using the full cinema, involving lots of our creative and crafty local auteurs in full-on messing about. Join us!
