Robin Williamson is, in no uncertain terms, a living legend. A mainstay of the whimsical psychedelic folk combo The Incredible String Band, he concentrates on harp playing and story-telling, he is also Honorary Chief Bard of The Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids. In 1959, the last cinema organ in Newcastle disappeared. It had been there since 1930, and generations of cinema goers thrilled to live music, both before, during and after the main feature. Today that cinema is the Carling Academy. And today, for the first time in over fifty years, a Newcastle cinema unveils a cinema organ, as the Star & Shadow launches its restored Compton organ.

A “brilliant, maddeningly enigmatic puzzle of a movie” (The New York Times), about a woman confronted with guilt, and the history of Argentina.

17 Film: Now It Can Be Told (1946)

The daring exploits of SOE agents sent into occupied France to aid the local resitance against the German occupying forces. Made for the most part in newly liberated France during the war, this production from the RAF used real Special Operations Executive personnel, locations and aircrew to recreate the scenes in the film.

18 Film: Hiroshima (Uruguay) (2009)

Incredible film, at once experimental in its form, challenging in its content, and visually beautiful: this is a non-identified floating object. Best described as a silent musical: no dialogue is heard at all throughout the film, but music from unsigned Uruguay rock/metal/psychedelic bands make the film fly. 24 hours in the life of a singer with autistic tendencies.

Johnny and Chris’ first show at the Star & Shadow, brings an attitude and freshness to old work songs, traditional ballads as well as firing up Johnny's own material. A legend in many of our lifetimes, and a timely reminder of the bleak past (and possible) future of the North East working class experience.

A visual poem in the stunning setting of a little house in the blue Mexican sea, where a father shows his 5 year old boy how to go fishing. Between documentary and fiction, this little gem has won prestigious prizes, among which the highest prize (tiger award) at the Rotterdam Film Festival.

In the last 3 years, 2000 young people from across the UK have volunteered on community projects in developing countries with Platform2 (www.myplatform2.com). These talented 18-25 year olds have returned passionate to expose the scandal of poverty and encourage others to take action.

Winner of the Best Film Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival, and elected Best Uruguayan Film of 2006 by the country’s Association of Film Critics, this is a slow and contemplative film about David, a 25-year-old who loves smoking pot, and has a heroic capacity for doing nothing. Tragicomedy of a slacker, shot on 16mm.
