For the first time in the UK on the night of April 24th, we will host Pawel Dudzinski featuring his intuitive Butoh dance performance with live music from his daughter Seweryna Dudzinska, Greaeme Wilson and James Watts.

To start with we'll screen a short documentary about the performer.

INCANTATIO (2009), directed by Tomek Wysokonski, is a mystery play in the heart of a wild forest, where the artist reinvents a sacred ritual of the dance of darkness, called ‘Ankoku Butoh’. Pawel Dudzinski developed intuitive ritual method, becoming a laudable successor of the traditions of such great Butoh masters as Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. In his artistic search, Dudziński takes from avant-garde art the most valuable means of expression, exploring an interpretation of his dance practice with forms of expression previously unknown in this field.

Himself about his work: "[…] by using improvisation we're reducing the rational side of our self and evoking the other- intuitive and irrational sphere- placed in the subconscious of our personality. […] in my theatre we have been working with this form for over thirty years now. It's all based on the act of collective creation.''

After the performance we'll have a talk on the role of improvisation in the creative process lead by Graeme Wilson from University of Edinburgh. The conversation will include practitioners from both performative and musical backgrounds.
