Walter Salles’ (director of Central Station and The Motorcycle Diaries and this year’s release On the Road) film follows pregnant single mother Cleuza (Sandra Corvelloni, who won the Palm d’Or at Cannes for Best Actress for this role) and her four sons, each by different fathers.

The oldest, motorcycle courier Dinho, works in a gas station, Dario wants to be a football player and youngest Reginaldo, is obsessed with finding his unknown father. All struggle to make ends meet and find their own escapism and challenges in São Paulo’s suburbs.

It mixes bombastic rhythms with powerful rap vocals in Brazilian slang which talk about life in Rio’s favelas; sex, love, poverty, violence, pride and aspirations, giving this once marginalized community a voice.
