Simon Joyner is a solitary songwriter living in Omaha, Nebraska. Considered by some to be the forefather of the burgeoning Omaha music scene, he has profoundly influenced the music of Bright Eyes.

Since the early '90s, Simon Joyner's legacy of futility has been strewn across nine full-length recordings, not to mention dozens of singles and compilations. Drawing comparisons to the likes of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, Will Oldham and Loudon Wainwright III; Joyner's voice embodies a wry and literate tone, and though his songs have been publicly praised by everyone from Beck to fellow Nebraskan Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), it was an early boost of confidence from over seas that kept him going. John Peel  played his album 'The Cowardly Traveler Pays His Toll' from beginning to end on air, only one of two times ever in his 30 years plus of broadcasting. The other instances occurred when Peel played 'The White Album' by The Beatles, and Bob Dylan's 'Desire'.
