Film: Cinema Of The World; Son Of A Lion (2007)

This brave film is set in the troubled region of the Hindu Kush, the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan. It tells of a boy, resistant to picking up his father's trade of gun-making as he challenges the expectations of those around him. Made secretly and with non-professsionals this is rough, gorgeous cinema that speaks from the heart. this film speaks of personal freedom, AK47s and poetry.

Local luminaries such as Milky Wimpshake and Pale Man Made will be performing covers by the likes of the Brilliant Corners, Shop Assistants, Sea Urchins and Field Mice, as well as tracks from their own fine repertoires, whilst rare archive footage of the period plays in the cinema next door. Reformed Faction (pioneers of the ambient music genre who have collaborated with some of the most important figures in experimental music and the Krautrock scene), Bruce Gilbert (founding member of legendary post-punkers, Wire, widely acknowledged as one of the most ground-breaking bands that come out of the UK punk scene and leading into such genres as post-punk or ‘art’ punk), and an appearance from Newcastle’s very own Emergency Librarian providing a glimpse into the fine electronic music produced by some of our contemporary local musicians.

Film: The Rumble Man: Link Wray (1997)

One of the most influential guitar players of all time, Link Wray pioneered an overdriven, distorted electric guitar sound, and invented the power chord, paving the way for punk and heavy rock. THE RUMBLE MAN follows the guitarist on his 1996 UK tour, and features classic tracks like 'Rumble' and 'Rawhide', as well as the man himself on music, life and friendship.

Film: The Films Of Enrico Cocozza (1950-60s)

Five short films by Enrico Cocozza film maker showing his diverse subject range Enrico Cocozza (1921–1997), was a Scottish filmmaker who won many film awards during the 1940s and 1950s. His often surreal films were mainly filmed in and around the town of Wishaw in Scotland, where his family owned the popular Belhaven Cafe. These include Chic's Day (1950), a prize winner at the 1951 Scottish Amateur Film Festival, The Living Ghost (1957), and Glasgow's Docklands (1959). Illness later forced him to give up making films and he spent most of his working life teaching at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. In 2001 he was the subject of the Channel 4 documentary Artery: the Story of Enrico Cocozza.

Gig: Ukelear Meltdown Iii

The third annual festival of extreme ukulele, Ukelear Meltdown celebrates lo-fi, punk rock approaches to the ukulele. This year we'll have films, workshops and bands from as far afield as the USA, Pakistan and Finland. Saturday night is gig night, so be there early for five uke led bands from across the globe.

There'll be more bands, but there'll also be workshops for children, for beginners, and on using effects pedals and making avant-garde noise. There'll also be films and the British premiere of THE MIGHTY UKE, a new feature length documentary from America.
