Event: The English Language Conversation Group

The English Language Conversation Group is a weekly event at the Star and Shadow for all people who want to meet and practice speaking English. It is an informal group and new people - volunteers to help people practice speaking English or learners to see what the group is like - are always welcome. The group is inclusive and travel expenses can be paid for if necessary.

Film: The Circle (2000)

Set over the course of a single day, Jafar Panahi's powerful film is an ensemble piece that tells the stark tales of several young Iranian women and the harsh society in which they live. Beginning with a childbirth, and the ensuing despair at the discovery that the baby is a girl, the film touches upon the myriad hardships endured by women living in Iran's male dominated world of bureaucracy, constant surveillance and age old inequalities. But even in the midst of this stifling environment, the spirit, strength and courage of the circle of women cannot be extinguished. Panahi's gripping and controversial film is further confirmation that Iranian cinema is now among the most original, vital and exciting in the world.

Film: Fables - A Film Opera (2010)

Streetwise runs a weekly music workshop Programme in 11 homeless centres around the country. Fables - A collection of four 7-minute Film Operas, created by Streetwise Opera performers working with some of the most exciting composers and filmakers in the UK. Tonight will screen the four films, 'The Making of' documentary a Q&A with the film-makers and a live performance by the local Streetwise group.
