Groucho, Harpo and Chico take on high society in the third of our SUNDAY SILVERS.Slapstick, good (and bad) jokes, routines, musical numbers, chaos and a bit of romance make this one of the finest Marx Brothers films out there.
A NIGHT AT THE OPERA was the Marx Brothers’ first film at MGM and their first without Zeppo. Reportedly one of the finest Marx Brothers’ comedies ever made. There’s so many one-liners that you’ll never remember them all.
MGM sent the troupe out to perform their skits live across the USA, which acted as a testing ground for the film and ensured maximum laughter in the cinemas.
The scene in the stateroom is possibly the most famous, ridiculous and hilarious. Another scene sees Groucho translating in a ‘foreign language’, which actually transpires to be his dialogue played backwards. Some people say that there’s too much singing, but what’s an opera without the tunes?!
The grand finale is a delicious piece of total and crazy devastation that puts its foot into the world of the highbrow elite – Marx Brothers’ style.
